Andy Staton, 26, is the newest member of the Moodswings team:-
A typical day for him begins at half nine by checking on those who are having a bit of a ‘blip’.
He will then move on to one to one sessions to establish how Moodswings can help people.
He said: “My favourite part of any day is the cooking session, because I get to eat! I also like the life skills group. The most rewarding part for me is to see someone smile who hasn’t smiled in a while.”
With his friendly manner and being a natural people person it comes as a surprise to learn Andy hasn’t always worked in the caring professions.
He studied a BA(Hons) in Performing Arts at the University of Salford and until recently worked for a TV studio agency.
But helping others has always come naturally to him.
“I began mid January but I before that I had been helping with days out. I became involved when I helped them make a promotional video and it just snowballed from there.”
Without a background in health care Andy has found his own challenges in his new job. He is working through them though, just like everyone else at Moodswings.
“At the moment I am finding the terminology a little hard to get my head around, but I am learning fast.”
“Stigma is a big problem for some people. Getting though the door is the biggest challenge most face. Some have just left hospital or haven’t been out of the house for a week. There are so many who will get to the front door and just go home.”
